چکیده

8 This paper is a plea for sociolinguistics to integrate both theoretical and methodological developments from cognitive linguistics and, 9 even more importantly, psycholinguistics. More specifically, I argue that theoretical advances involving exemplar-based models and new 10 methodological tools from psycholinguistics (regressions, in particular mixed-effects models) and corpus linguistics (in particular, more 11 bottom-up studies) would help further sociolinguistics to a considerable degree. To exemplify at least some ways what such 12 developments would look like, I then discuss three small case studies of instances of constructional variation in usage/corpus data, 13 which showcase how contextual as well as cognitive-/psycholinguistic language-internal and sociolinguistic language-external factors 14 interact and can be explored. 15 © 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Researching (Non) Fluent L2 Speakers’ Oral Communication Deficiencies: A Psycholinguistic Perspective

Fluency in a second language (L2) involves a quintessentially cognitive processing system that operates quickly and effectively. The perceived importance of researching fluency through a psycholinguistic lens has motivated the related L2 research to resort to current cognitive speaking-specific models. This study, drawing on Levelt’s (1999a) psycholinguistic model, probed the deficiency sources...

CHAPTER 10 Statistical Measures for UsageBased Linguistics

The advent of usage-/exemplar-based approaches has resulted in a major change in the theoretical landscape of linguistics, but also in the range of methodologies that are brought to bear on the study of language acquisition/learning, structure, and use. In particular, methods from corpus linguistics are now frequently used to study distributional characteristics of linguistics units and what th...

Abstract Concepts Through the Lens of Linguistic and Extra-Linguistic Knowledge

The paper deals with the rigorous methods used in the research of concepts representing abstract notions like “friendship”, “love”, “hatred”, “conscience”, and “envy”. Concepts of that kind have no visible physical support in the material world except for the sound forms of the words representing them, thus causing additional difficulties in classification, research and analysis as well as stip...

Optical Coherence Tomography and Corpus Callosum Index in Cognitive Assessment of Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease of central nervous system. Different approaches have been developed to study MS progression and cognitive dysfunction as the major symptom of the disease. The current study compared Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Corpus Callosum Index (CCI) for the early evaluation of cognitive dysfunction in MS patients.  Objectives: T...

Hyperspectral Image Classification Based on the Fusion of the Features Generated by Sparse Representation Methods, Linear and Non-linear Transformations

The ability of recording the high resolution spectral signature of earth surface would be the most important feature of hyperspectral sensors. On the other hand, classification of hyperspectral imagery is known as one of the methods to extracting information from these remote sensing data sources. Despite the high potential of hyperspectral images in the information content point of view, there...
